Taman Tugu Nursery

Explore forest trails and contribute to biodiversity in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Taman Tugu is Kuala Lumpur’s newest public green space: a 66-acre urban forest park located off Jalan Parlimen. The site has a long history: first serving as a residential area for British colonial officers, and after independence, Malaysian government officials and civil servants. After a period of disuse Taman Tugu is now a forest in recovery. 5,000 trees consisting of more than 230 indigenous rainforest species have been reintroduced within the site.

Approximately 6.5km of forest trails are currently open to the public, with more slated to be opened. There are toilets, shower facilities, surau, and seating areas at the Taman Tugu Nursery, as well as multi-purpose roofed structures that can be rented for events.

Free Tree Society is running a capacity building focused environmental education programme in partnership with Taman Tugu Project Development Sdn. Bhd. the Taman Tugu-Free Tree Society Nature Education Programme, sponsored by CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad.

What do we do at Taman Tugu Nursery?

A typical session will see the Free Tree Society team leading volunteers through:

  • An introduction to Free Tree Society
  • Guided Jungle Walk featuring talks on conservation of ecosystems and climate change
  • Environmental Solutions Talks (water scarcity and rainwater harvesting, composting and waste reduction)
  • Planting Workshop (soil mixing, propagation, and transplanting)
  • Nursery Management (plant care and nursery maintenance)

As plants are grown sustainably they need lots of care. Nursery management for volunteers include transplanting, propagation, fertilising and watering the plants, pest control – whatever needs to get done! The planting and propagation of plants at Taman Tugu Nursery are geared towards providing other parks and urban forests with native rainforest trees. Volunteers may also be asked to collect seeds from the forest.

We will provide all necessary tools and equipment. Volunteers are advised to wear clothes and shoes suitable for outdoor gardening work. Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops for protection from mosquitoes. Volunteers should bring their own mosquito repellent, sunscreen, hat and change of clothing. An umbrella or poncho may be required.

An ethos of being green and sustainable underpins all activities. When you attend our volunteering sessions, kindly try to:

  • Travel Green – travel via public transport or car pooling
  • Manage Your Waste – recycle on site, compost, think zero waste
  • F&B – bring your own water bottle; if you are bringing your own meal, do consider going vegetarian/vegan and be sure to go single-use plastic free (e.g. straws, cutlery and mineral water).

As part of our zero waste effort, FTS does not accept gifts/tokens such as t-shirts and mugs. While we appreciate the gesture, consider instead making a donation towards our programmes.

Location

The volunteering activities are conducted at the Taman Tugu Nursery on Jalan Sultan Salahuddin.

If driving or using an e-hailing service, set the location to “Taman Tugu”. Ask to be dropped off at the gate and walk to the cluster of buildings inside. We are at the roofed area with metal tables and chairs, in-between the toilets and the surau.

Parking is available inside the Taman Tugu Nursery compound and at the Persatuan Perkhidmatan Tadbir dan Diplomatik (PPTD) carpark, a short walk away.

Alternatively, parking is available at the Padang Merbok carpark or the Lake Gardens Multi-Storey Carpark. Both are about 12 to 15 minutes’ walk to the Taman Tugu Nursery entrance.

The Taman Tugu-Free Tree Society Nature Education Programme is sponsored by CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad.
